A Discussion on Global Climate Change

with:

Dr. Patrick Allitt of Emory University

Join the Atlanta Council on International Relations for an exclusive talk by Dr. Patrick Allitt a Cahoon Family Professor of American History at Emory University. Anxiety about climate change has a long history, including alarms about excessive heat and cold.  These concerns rose to a climax in the late twentieth century as industrialization accelerated around the world.  Agreements on atmospheric management, starting in the 1960s, showed a shared agreement about the severity of these problems, but enforcement has never been easy. We invite the Atlanta community to join us for a discussion on this critical topic.

Meet Dr. Patrick Allitt of Emory University

Dr. Patrick Allitt was born in Mickleover a suburb of Derby in Derbyshire, England in the mid 1950s. He received his undergraduate at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England but felt a desire to study abroad in the States. He completed his Doctorate in American History at the University of California Berkeley in Berkeley, California where he decided to continue both his education and career in the United States. He held postdoctoral fellowships at both Harvard Divinity School and Princeton University. Since 1988, Dr. Allitt has worked as an esteemed professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia teaching environmentalism, American history, religious history, and on Victorian Britain as well as a plethora of other subjects with aplomb. In addition to being a high quality educator, Dr. Allitt is an extremely talented author penning several books such as A Climate of Crisis: America in the Age of Environmentalism (2014) and The Conservatives: Ideas and Personalities Throughout American History (2009). We feel that his unique perspective is perfect in leading a discussion on the pitfalls of climate change and how the United States can best mitigate this crisis from a policy perspective. This is certainly not one to miss.

China Cognitive Warfare

with

Josh Baughman, US National Defense University

Cognitive Warfare is seen as its own domain in modern warfare alongside the four military domains defined by their environment (land, maritime, air and space) and the cyber domain connects them all. Cognitive Warfare operates on a global stage as we are all digitally connected and uses information technology and the tools, machines, networks and systems to seek out it's target: intelligence.

China, as a strategic competitor to NATO, describes Cognitive Warfare as the use of public opinion, psychological operations, and legal influence to achieve victory. Combat psychology has significant impact on the warfighter's ability to function with a focus on recording facial information, emotional changes and psychological states of soldiers to determine their combat status.  Outside of the battlefield, influence can also affect law, rule-of-order and civil constructs.
